10 people hospitalized after apartment balcony collapses near UC campus

LEAD THE WAY. I want to keep you posted on this latest news right out of UC. SEVERAL PEOPLE, SERIOUS INJURIES. NOW THERE IS A BALCONY. BALCONY COLLAPSES INTO STRAIGHT IN AN APARTMENT COMPLEX. And we’re now told at least ten people were rushed to hospital. This is happening in a student apartment building along Stetson Street, right there on the University of Cincinnati campus, or right off campus. Let’s get straight to the scene. SEAN MACKINNON and SEAN, you just heard about these injuries. Yeah, we got that update on those injuries. SEVEN PEOPLE TAKEN TO UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. TWO CAUGHT ON A GOOD SAT. A PERSON TAKEN TO CHRIST HOSPITAL. ONE OF THESE PEOPLE HAS LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES. THEY WERE TAKEN TO UC HOSPITAL. They are in surgery at the moment. I want to show you this balcony collapse right here. YOU CAN SEE IT WHERE IT WAS UP THERE. ANOTHER BALCONY, FOR EXAMPLE, IS ON THE RIGHT. There was at least what was described earlier as a 20 foot drop. YOU CAN SEE THIS WOODEN BALCONY NOW ON THE SIDE AT THE GROUNDS OF THIS PARKING LOT OF THIS APARTMENT COMPLEX. One of those fire investigators, with his flashlight out, taking pictures, documenting the scene, analyzing exactly what happened here. THERE ARE STILL STUDENTS HERE TONIGHT. I’m talking to the police, I’m talking to the Cincinnati Fire Department. Again, we know there are ten injured. NOW, ONE OF THESE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN GOING TO THE HOSPITAL WITH LIFE EATING INJURIES, SEVERAL OF THESE PEOPLE HAVE SERIOUS INJURIES, SOME OF THEM ALSO WITH MORE MINOR INJURIES. STUDENTS ARE SHAKEN TONIGHT. As you can see again, this balcony collapsed here, not far from UC Health, not far from the University of Cincinnati. THIS IS NOT STUDENT ACCOMMODATION. The Cincinnati Police Department tells us that, but it is. STUDENTS LIVE IN THESE APARTMENTS. Everyone we talked to tonight, our students. Cincinnati police say they were here. A KIND OF CELEBRATION FOR PASSING AN EXAM TODAY. That’s why they were all together. POLICE SAY IT WAS A STRUCTURAL FAILURE. THE WOODEN TERRACE. TONIGHT, EARLIER THIS EVENING. COLLAPSE.
