Ten people were killed and nine injured in a fire at a residential building in northwest China’s Xinjiang region, state media reported on Friday.
The fire broke out at a high-rise building on Thursday evening, the official Xinhua news agency said at around 7:50 p.m. (1150 GMT).
“Ten people died despite emergency treatment,” Xinhua reported.
“The injuries sustained by nine other people are not life-threatening,” he added, adding that an investigation into the fire had begun.
Deadly fires are common in China, due to weak safety standards and corrupt officials tasked with enforcing them.
This week, 38 people were killed and two injured in a fire at a factory in the central Chinese city of Anyang.
Authorities blamed “electric welding in which workers violated safety measures.”
