1 killed in I-55 head-on crash after airborne vehicle rolls over into oncoming traffic – NBC Chicago

The driver of a vehicle hit head-on when a high-speed crash sent another car flying into the air before it overturned and landed in oncoming traffic on Interstate 55 in the county de Cook has died, authorities said Tuesday.

According to Illinois State Police, the crash happened just after 8:45 a.m. on the freeway near Central Avenue in Cook County.

Authorities said the driver of a vehicle was traveling at high speed before hitting another vehicle and ‘entered the ditch on the left side’ before ‘flying off and rolling over several times’ where it then struck another vehicle head-on.

Sky 5 aerial footage of the scene showed one vehicle on the south side of the freeway and two others on the north side of the freeway.

The driver of the second vehicle who was hit head-on was taken to an area hospital and eventually died, state police said. The driver of the original vehicle was also hospitalized following the accident.

All lanes were initially closed following the accident and the closures remained in effect for hours while police worked to investigate and clear the scene.
