1 dead after gunfire in Oceanside


A man was found shot dead on a street in Oceanside on Friday afternoon, shortly after police reported someone was pasting graffiti in the neighborhood, police said.

Shortly after 4 p.m., someone called police to report seeing someone applying graffiti on San Diego Street near Joe Balderrama Park, department spokeswoman Jennifer Atenza said.

As they drove to the scene, police received calls from witnesses reporting that shots had been fired, Atenza said.

Officers arrived and found a man with multiple gunshot wounds. He was dead. Atenza said.

Oceanside police have asked people to avoid the area while homicide detectives investigate.

Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to call the Oceanside Police Department at (760) 435-4900. For emergency response, authorities advised calling 911.
